Guy Fawkes Night

In England,there had been many many years of fighting between the Catholics and the Protestants. The Catholics regarded the Pope (in Rome) as the head of their Church, but the Protestants said that the head of the English Church was the King of England. By the time that James I, a Protestant, became King, the Catholics had been treated very badly and were getting very fed up!
A Catholic called Robert Catesby decided to do something about it. He brought five men together and told them his secret plan. One of the men was Guy Fawkes.
The Plot: Catesby wanted to get rid of the King and his Parliament. He decided to blow them up with gunpowder! In early November, the members of Parliament were going to meet together and the King would be there too, so Catesby and the other men decided that this would be a good opportunity. They rented a house next door to the Parliament buildings, and started to dig a tunnel underneath to get to the cellars! This took a very long time and was very hard work. Later they found a cellar underneath the Parliament buildings which they could rent. Much easier! They moved the gunpowder into the cellar.
More Catholics joined the plotters, but as more men heard about the plot, it became harder to keep it secret. Eventually, someone sent a warning letter to one of the Members of Parliament and the plot was discovered!
Soldiers were sent to the rented house and the cellars and found the gunpowder. They also found Guy Fawkes, waiting with matches ready to light the fuse which would make the gunpowder explode. He was arrested and horribly tortured to make him tell who else was involved. All the plotters were found guilty of treason and executed.
The Members of Parliament were very pleased that they had not been blown up! They made a law that 5th November would be a day of thanksgiving and celebration. So that is why we have bonfires and fireworks on "bonfire night"!

En Inglaterra durante muchos, muchos años hubo fuertes enfrentamientos entre los católicos y los protestantes. Los católicos consideraban que el Papa (en Roma) era la cabeza de su Iglesia, pero los protestantes dijeron que el jefe de la Iglesia era el rey de Inglaterra. En el momento en que Jaime I, un protestante, se convirtió en rey, los católicos eran tratados muy mal y estaban muy cansados de ese trato. Así que, un católico llamado Robert Catesby decidió hacer algo al respecto. Trajo a cinco hombres y les dijo su plan secreto. Uno de los hombres fue Guy Fawkes.

El complot: Catesby quería deshacerse del rey y su Parlamento y decidió ¡volarlo con pólvora!

A principios de noviembre, los miembros del Parlamento iban a reunirse y el rey estaría allí también, así que Catesby y los otros hombres decidieron que sería una buena oportunidad. Alquilaron una casa al lado de los edificios del Parlamento, y comenzaron a cavar por debajo un túnel para llegar a las bodegas. Esto ocurrió hace mucho tiempo y el trabajo fue muy duro. Más tarde se encontraron con un sótano debajo de los edificios del Parlamento que se podría alquilar. ¡Mucho más fácil! Trasladaron la pólvora al sótano. Y muchos más católicos se unieron a los conspiradores, pero a medida que más hombres lo sabían, se hacía más difícil mantenerlo en secreto.

Lógicamente, alguien envió una carta de advertencia a uno de los miembros del Parlamento y ¡la trama fue descubierta! Los soldados fueron enviados a la casa alquilada y a las bodegas donde se encuentrba la pólvora. También encontraron a Guy Fawkes, esperando recibir instrucciones para encender la mecha que haría explotar la pólvora. Fue detenido y torturado para que descubriera a las otras personas involucradas. Todos fueron declarados culpables de traición y ejecutados.

Los miembros del Parlamento se pusieron muy contentos de haber conseguido que no explotara el edificio con ellos dentro.

Finamente, aprobaron una ley por la que el 05 de noviembre sería un día de acción de gracias y de celebración.

Es por eso que esa noche hay muchas hogueras y fuegos artificiales, llamándose "noche de las hogueras"
